Do you wish for shampoo-commercial hair, but your tresses lack the necessary shine and fullness? Thinning hair and hair loss can affect people of all ages. But fear not, there’s a solution to every problem, once you know what you’re up against.

Where has my hair gone?

  • Hair loss and thinning hair can be the result of genetics, hormone changes, medications, diet or environment. While it is a natural occurrence when one ages, hair loss can result in long-term baldness, which can be an embarrassing condition to most who suffer from it, especially young men and women.
  • Some people also suffer from thinning of hair all over the scalp (rather than patchy baldness). This can be due to various causes. In this situation, the hair loss usually recovers completely.
  • One such cause is mental or physical stress, and thinning often occurs 2–3 months after the event. This is because at the time of the stress many follicles enter telogen (the resting phase) prematurely, and are then shed together at the end of telogen a few months later.
  • A lack of blood circulation and an oily scalp can also contribute to hair fall-out. Oil build-up can block the hair follicle and inhibit, or even halt its natural growth cycle, resulting in fewer hairs over the years.
  • Poor eating can contribute to hair loss, as the body isn’t getting enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to sustain hair growth.
  • You can also see a doctor to rule out other common causes (such as thyroid deficiency and iron deficiency or other medications. Endocrine (hormonal) conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid disease, can interfere with hair production and cause hair loss. Some skin disorders, such as eczema or psoriasis of the scalp, can cause thinning of the hair. Usually the hair grows again once the skin problem is treated.
  • Pulling your hair very tightly, for extensions, ponytails, buns or cornrow braids for long periods of time can damage the hair follicles underneath the skin. The tension from pulling your hair follicles for months or years can cause permanent hair loss, most often at the forehead and temples.
  • Colouring, bleaching, perming and straightening, if done improperly or in excess can cause hair to break or fall out. It is important to wait for healthy hair to grow back. Some treatments if done too often can even cause permanent hair loss. Make sure you are gentle on your hair and don’t have processes done too often.

How can I get it back?

Unless you can afford an expensive hair transplant operation, there is no “quick fix” for hair loss. Other options like laser therapy to restore hair growth works only for a very specific group of people. There are several simple things you can do to prevent hair loss from worsening and even reverse it.

  • Check the shampoo you’re using. Most shampoos in the market contain harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Research shows that even low concentrations of SLS can cause scalp irritation, tangled hair, and split or fuzzy hair. You can also use a pH balanced shampoo. The pH of a healthy scalp ranges from 4.5 to 5.5.
  • Be gentle when washing your hair; twisting and moving your hair around with your fingers can cause breakage and get them pulled out. Also, when hair is wet the shaft is weaker, making it easier to pull them out. Your hair should mostly be dry before you attempt to style it.
  • The condition of your scalp is also very important. When the hair follicle releases excess sebum it accumulates on the scalp. Here it will combine with dirt, dead scalp cells, and other residues like gel.
  • Using natural ingredients reduces the amount of chemicals available to combine with excess sebum and dead scalp cells. Keeping your scalp clean and follicles open not only reduces the odds of thinning hair or hair loss, it also enables better absorption of any treatments you may want to apply
  • Consider your diet. If your diet severely lacks fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin B2 (riboflavin), this may have an indirect effect on the condition of your hair
  • Use a clinically proven scalp lotion. There are currently only 2 approved drugs by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is clinically proven and widely prescribed topical medical ingredient for hair loss, one of which is Minoxidil.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle:
    • Eat a balanced diet
    • Avoid excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption
    • Do moderate exercise to improve blood circulation in your scalp
    • Protect your hair from harmful elements such as UV rays. LW
